Since 1991, Pronatura Veracruz has been attent to how children understand, relate to, and may influence the environment. This is how the environmental education program was initiated, though not formally. It wasn’t until 1995, that the program became formalized with the production of a manual created for school teachers in the central region of the state of Veracruz.
General Objective
To create consciousness and knowledge in the local people about the importance of preserving birds of prey and their habitat.
Pronatura Veracruz worked with the authorities to gain support and authorization from the Secretary of Education and Culture, for access to the schools in the 14th school zone in Cardel, Ver. Workshops for school teachers took place to demonstrate the contents, activities, and how to use and optimize the manual in daily classroom activities.
Along with the manual, the education team has created a box of materials that includes a series of cards, posters, figures and puppets easily made with recycled material. Up till now, work is done in schools in the area during autumn and spring, applying the manual and imparting workshops for teachers. However, not only formal environmental education is done, also informal methods are used as in festivals, talks, workshops, classes, etc.
Goals
- To include the manual “ Veracruz: Río de Rapaces Manual de Educación Ambiental para Conservación de las Aves Rapaces y su hábitat en Veracruz, dirigido a maestros de enseñanza primaria” in the study plan of the Secretary of Public Education, where Pronatura would give follow up mentoring.
- To amplify the impact and coverage of environmental education by way of a new observatory.
