Who We Are
Pronatura is a Mexican non profit organization whose mission is the conservation of flora, fauna and priority ecosystems, promoting the development of a society in harmony with nature.
Pronatura has representatives in six different parts of Mexico, these being: Pronatura Chiapas, Pronatura Northeast, Pronatura Peninsula de Yucatán, Pronatura Northeast-Sea of Cortés, Pronatura headquarters in Mexico City and Pronatura Veracruz. Pronatura, as a family, has 25 years of experience and results in conservation in Mexico.
In particular Pronatura Veracruz has been working for 15 years. We conserve species and ecosystems through: Environmental education, research and monitoring, habitat conservation, support to natural areas management, outreach and communication, community development and alternative productive projects, training, community participation and volunteerism, planning for conservation, and political influence. We work on local, regional and national scales. All our decisions are based in scientific knowledge either generated by us or by other academic institutions or other non profit organizations with which we establish alliances. We work with the communities that live within or closely to natural areas, with land owners and resource users, with city inhabitants for them to understand the value of nature, with the government: Municipal, state and federal levels, and with other organizations looking for sustainable development alternatives.
In general we are a well positioned organization: We have a continuous presence in the local media, we are frequently invited to different forums and seminars, we are consulted for some environmental decisions in the state and we have a wide arrange of alliances established with the local government, academic institutions and other organized groups. We have increased the environmental awareness of specific target groups, such as children, fishermen, farmers and key decision makers about importance of conservation and priority sites. We are well known for the ornithological expertise of our staff and for the establishment of bird and habitat research and monitoring methodologies and conservation strategies adapted to local conditions.
Our budget in 2002 was about 230,000 USD. Out of which 60% is support from foreign foundations and governments, 19% from tours that we arrange and guide, 6% from membership and15% from contributions of Board Members and Mexican Companies. Although we still have a long way to go in fundraising for our conservation endeavors, with the commitment and skills of all the staff and board members we should be able to increase the donors’ interest in investing in Veracruz.
